Interests picked for me...
El Laberinto del Fauno
This is the original name for the film Pan's Labyrinth. It's an awesome film set during the Spanish Civil War, which I have written about before on here. I went to see it with
jaffacakequeen and
kristoferllama shortly after being accepted for my job here. I remember being thrilled at the idea that someday I would understand what the actors were saying without reading the subtitles. I watched it here with my flatmate a couple of months ago. The words, they made sense! Not all, but enough to make me feel happy and smug.
Hating Knowsley
I hate the place. I hate the entire place. Where I come from is in the suburbs, a few kilometres from Liverpool. The village where I grew up is very lovely and very old. My family home is beautiful. However, the place itself is full of middling, racist, ignorant asshats. To paraphrase Byron, I love my country... I just don't really like some of my countrymen. I would never go to Knowsley again if my beloved family were not there. That said, I added this interest when I was living in Knowsley. Now I don't feel so much hate as a lack of love.
Wishing Websense Would Die
In my work, they block Facebook. Fair enough. They block Livejournal. Fair enough. They block all web-based e-mail. Fair...enough. They also block: The Guardian, BBC Weather, General Motors USA (WE WORK FOR GENERAL MOTORS), Google Images...in short, everything useful. And you may try and click onto CNN news and be told by Websense: "The category SEX is restricted." DIAF, Websense.
Ghetto Sushi
I love sushi fresh from a restaurant, but even more do I love sushi from Marks and Spencers, in its little plastic packet, with its little dab of wasabi and bottle of soy sauce in a fish-shaped container! It's perfect. It's ghetto. Don't try Asda sushi, though - it is ghetto in that it tastes like you are licking a train.

Love and Squalor
This is from the short story collection For Esme, With Love and Squalor, by JD Salinger. I believe it was released in America as Nine Stories. The stories really stay with me from that book; Seymour and the bananafish; the simple poem that reads pretty mouth and green my eyes; The Laughing Man and his terrible sadness. Above all, I love the title story, that of the jaded American soldier in a little cafe in England during the war, who meets a precocious little English girl, Esme, who says she is fascinated by squalor. Things happen, etc, etc. The narrator begins to fall apart, but there is always that meeting with Esme to remember:You take a really sleepy man, Esme, and he always stands a chance of becoming a man with all his faculties intact.

According to my family I am stuck up and arrogant and have no sense of place or roots or culture, but I cannot describe my glee in discovering that in your interests list.
Also LOL 4CHAN.

I was very impressed with Labyrinth, too. The one thing that perturbed me was that all the marketing done for it, at least in the U.S., made it look like it would be a fantasy movie. Dark, weird fantasy, granted, but nothing with torture and murder and a guy stitching his own face up -- in close-up. It was great stuff but eek, I'm sure many, many folks were shocked. Whoever marketed that film was clueless.
I enjoy ghetto sushi too. No M&S here, but I do get it from the supermarket sometimes, places the equivalent of Tesco, and enjoy it. Long as it's made that same day, it's often fine.
