Oh my God, I hate packing. I HATE IT. I have to pack cleverly enough for a week of business in freezing, awesome Edinburgh and then a week of shenanigans in Alsace with the family, carting two freaking laptops around (my colleague will be flying in from Buenos Aires, so I agreed to take her computer with me). Urgh! At least I can look forward to seeing Scotland again.

In between packing and raging over the broken plug for my British phone*, I went to see Vicky Cristina Barcelona at the cinema with Hannah and Assel tonight. I've heard that the film has come into a lot of criticism because the city effectively paid Woody Allen to film here; there are no Catalan actors in it; it's not the Real Barcelona baawwww.

Okay, so Cristina wanders around La Rambla with her bag just hanging off her shoulder and in reality it would have been snatched in 0.0005 seconds. They filmed in the richer parts of the city. It was all Gaudi, Gaudi, Gaudi. If you photographed one of the prostitutes in the Raval, they wouldn't wave. They'd cut you.

But it was funny. It was a dreamy, often sharp film. Penelope Cruz was tormented, sexy and stole the entire show. The arguments with Javier Bardem were priceless. It's very much a (rich) tourist's view of the city, but what's wrong with that? I loved this affectionate, witty film and that's that.

*[livejournal.com profile] airiddh1 , I'm going to buy a new charger whilst I'm in Edinburgh, but that may have to wait till Monday or Tuesday, so if you can't reach me by phone, just drop me an e-mail.

I would definitely recommend it. The beginning is full of Johannsen, but when Cruz comes in and has this amazing verbal sparring with Bardem, you'll love it.

Me, too! I always forget something important. I just pray it's not my passport this time. :p

Is their sparring in Spanish, cuz that would be ridiculously sexy?

Ohoho, yes. Most of it in Spanish and so funny. I couldn't catch a huge amount of it because it was so fast, but it was the tone and her expressions that were priceless. Also, she goes into a screaming fit about 'mierda' a lot. It's about the only Spanish word you need to know to appreciate how funny it is. ;)
