They moved the cemetery to three outside the city (one of them being Pere Lachaise, which fell outside the city boundaries at the time). They then gathered up the remains of remaining bodies and used them to line the walls of the Catacombs (ergh!) though apparently some mass graves were too recent and were just built over. So Les Halles shopping centre is built on a graveyard! Whoo!
