Oh, man. I’m loving Casanova on BBC1 right now. This follows on from my Dr. Who squeeage, which was also written by Russell T. Davies. This man is single-handedly saving British television! It’s just so funny, dark and well-scripted—a mix of modern sharpness with the aesthetics of old Venice. Even better, there are moments of high learning juxtaposed against silly humour:

Casanova: (seriously) “Do you know what Casanova means?”
Lady: (intrigued) “No.”
Casanova: “Lucky Bastard.”

Venice is so beautiful. *sigh*. I have to go sooner rather than later, or will pine away for it.

Peter O’Toole has a gentle wit about him as the aged Casanova recounting his heady younger days, which reminds me of something excellent I read the other day:

“TROY actor PETER O'TOOLE walked out of the critically-slammed movie after 50 minutes, because it reminded him of a bread advert.

The veteran British star admits the mega-budget film was so boring to watch, he started conjuring up mental images of a boring TV advertisement for bread company HOVIS - and subsequently walked out of the screening in fits of laughter.

Troy, yesterday
Achilles laying siege to Troy, yesterday.

"I call it Trovis. After watching 50 minutes I found myself in quiet despair, and suddenly that Hovis advert came into my mind over Brad Pitt's face," the actor was quoted by Contactmusic as saying. "I got the chuckles and had to leave," he added.”

Ahahahahaa. It’s just the kind of offbeat humour you’d expect from Casanova. >:)

I saw the first ep on BBC3 and thought while it was good I just don't buy that actor as Cassanova. Plenty of times I've seen films, progeys etc.. with actors who are adored by all when I don't find them attractive but I can see it, even if it isn't to my taste. However that guy, sorry there is no way he would charm all those women to bed. Still Matt Lucas all made up like that, well I thought I'd died and gone to a very cool heaven.

Matt Lucas = large baby. Also equals comedy genius. Hurrah!

Oh, I dunno. I think he's really cheeky. He has that young lothario look about him... though you're right, he doesn't look much like those line drawings we have of Casanova! ;)

I heard yesterday he is top choice for new Dr Who, I think he would suit that down to a tee (unless Eddie Izzard did it, which he won't)
