I’ve just returned to Barcelona after a long weekend in Liverpool. I’ve been looking forward to catching up with friends and family back in England for a while. I spent Saturday with my family, catching up, then met up with [livejournal.com profile] patchworkgirl_ on Sunday for a frankly awesome film marathon composed of classic films, including the shamelessly manipulative weeper Dark Victory and the oh-hay-I-never-realised-it-was-so-good From Here to Eternity.

It was so good to chill and I was grateful for the endless cups of tea and the general craic. And how I rejoiced at the appearance of a chippy tea, even if I choked on my chips when I was informed that Franz fucking Ferdinand had played in Liverpool for the European Capital of Culture festivities ONE DAY BEFORE I GOT HERE AAARGH!

I think [livejournal.com profile] patchworkgirl_ regretted telling me this when my shriek of despair cracked windows across the city, though I forgave her on account of the endless television and movies she has provided me with for the next two months.

On Monday, I went shopping in the city centre and came back with a haul of sushi stuff and exotic food from Mattas, an obscene amount of smellies from Lush that my credit card will be paying off for the next decade and summer clothes from *coughPrimarkcough*, along with a haul of books including The Other Boleyn Girl and some titillating ‘history’ of the sordid lives of Roman emperors. Whee.

Chris also came around to visit and we watched Day Watch, the sequel to…er…Night Watch. I really, really enjoyed the film. It was so schlocky and enjoyable, much more character-driven than the first, with some really vivid characters. I want to read and write fanfic for it so much! I was also thrilled at catching snippets of the Russian spoken. I really do need to keep up with learning that language.

This morning, I lay in bed, eyes wide open and my heart quailing at the thought of going out in those gales. A travel warning had been issued, but unfortunately my flight was not cancelled and so I had to get to the airport. My mother said she was scared to drive in the winds and I felt so wretched, because it was honestly terrifying. All our garden furniture, including extremely heavy stuff, had been blown over. As we drove up the road, the wooded part of Knowsley Lane was in pitch black as the power had been blown out along a large stretch, with a tree blown right into the road. There was a dead cat further up, poor thing.

The crosswinds were so bad on the way to the airport that I honestly just wanted to turn back – they were rocking the car, which is pretty large, so that my mum struggled to keep control of the road. I staggered into the airport and found that the flights were delayed because of the ‘adverse weather conditions’, but that was all. I’m home safe now in sunny Spain, with nothing worse than a headache from that horrible Pyrenees descent. My mum phoned to say she got home okay, too. I said I knew she’d be safe, I didn’t doubt it for a moment. I was too busy praying for safety at the time. :p
