This is a gamble, because [livejournal.com profile] airiddh1 and [livejournal.com profile] ladydaydream are likely to smack me for debasing the original, but this is making me so happy right now, on repeat for the fifth time. Ahahhaa!

Whee! :D After insect drama too traumatic to go into and annoying busy crap all this week, catching up with friends and family and having songs on repeat and cooking (when not screaming in terror at insects) is pretty fun.

This post is 1/3 because RL has swallowed up any imagination I have at the moment, 1/3 because I couldn't get any of [personal profile] tsaress' songs, 1/3 because I like any excuse to write out favourite lyrics and 1/3 because I can't count.

Guess the Lyrics and Win a Prize*

1. We'd like to go to town, but we can't risk it
2. Como se llama, senorita?
3. No-one cared until the night she went out walking all alone... and never came home
4. How I wish that I could feel the good beyond the poison in us like you do
5. Now I'm not frightened of this world, believe me
6. Yes, I admit that I'm a fool for you
7. I try to get to my taxi - man in a tracksuit attacks me
8. And someone is playing a game in the house that I grew up in
9. Welcome to the human race
10. If your new love ever turns you down, come back, I will be around
11. I flirt with every flighty thing that looks my way
12. Oh, what an exit! That's how to go!
13. So if I can shoot rabbits, then I can shoot fascists
14. And I know that it's true, I can tell by that look in your eyes
15. I was swimming in the Caribbean
16. It's such a lovely day, and I'm glad you feel the same
17. Well, if the birds can reach the sky to this land, I'll be with you
18. Papa's looking for mama, but mama is nowhere in sight
19. Stoned in a lonely town
20. Your lips a magic world, your sky all hung with jewels

Songs OMG

Various Friends tagged me to do the “Six Songs I like now” meme, so I’m finally doing it in lieu of a Proper Entry.

Athlete – Wires

Along with a good few people that I know, the lyrics to this song struck me as worthy of mockery, until I found out that it’s actually about the lead singer’s daughter. On the night of her birth, she was premature and survival looked bleak. The juxtaposition of this soft, vulnerable little life and the “wires” of the machine keeping her alive scarring her skin really gets me.

You’ve got wires going in
You’ve got wires, coming out of your skin
You’ve got tears, making tracks
I’ve got tears that are scared of the facts.

Rilo Kiley – Portions for Foxes

I don’t really know or follow Rilo Kiley, but I heard this on one of the music channels one morning and couldn’t stop singing it all day. I love the singer’s voice, but the lyrics are pretty good, too. It finds the love amid the chaos of a turbulent relationship.

Rufus Wainwright – Oh, What a World

I like the spoilt, middle-class lyrics revelling in melodrama: “oh, what a world my parents gave me.” I love Wainwright’s irony here and the later affirmation that life is indeed beautiful. It brings a grin to my face—I have to love it for that. But, best of all, when Rufus sings this live and ponders “why am I always on a plane or a fast train?” he interjects, “because I’m fabulous.” Got to love that man.

Still, I think I’m doing fine
Wouldn’t it be a lovely headline?
“Life is beautiful” on the New York Times

Rufus Wainwright – Hallelujah

Forget all mention of Jeff Buckley.* Muted, thoughtful lyrics throughout given real feeling by Wainwright.

Maybe there’s a God above
And all I’ve ever learned from love
Is how to shoot someone down who overthrew you

Helena – My Number One

Yes. YeahIknow. I know! It’s tacky, it’s ditzy, it’s loud and the lyrics are…ahem… well. But the Greeks were so proud of winning Eurovision, and I didn’t go more than a few hours in Greece without hearing this song afterwards. I hear it and I’m back there…

The Cure – In Between Days

Am rediscovering my semi-Goth band of choice from when I was fourteen, yo. The song just makes me really happy. Also makes me think of being in France or finally visiting Italy because of that Renault advert in which it appears.

Cut for anyone who doesn’t want to be depressed until the awards are televised tonight )

Even more depressingly, Alex Kapranos has decided to reinvent himself as Begbie from Trainspotting

Bang, bang. Europe shall weep.

[livejournal.com profile] zhonghua2000 posted recently about the alleged fifty worst songs in the world. Being a bitter sort of person, there are an infinite number of songs I hate, so I decided to make my own list of ”songs )

In non-bitter news, thanks everyone for the birthday wishes! Was most splendid.
