The Road to New Orleans

This post is one I have savoured even uploading. It is a post with the pictures as we entered Louisiana and New Orleans, and the first day there. I am so grateful to [livejournal.com profile] annemariewrites for such an amazing journey and for sharing in and totes understanding the obsession and the excitement I have for this city.

Hokay, so it was back on the road the next day, through Mississippi. Now, it looked pretty damned interesting and Jackson was cool and we stopped off at Cracker Barrel (I LOVE YOU, CRACKER BARREL) ...

... but really, Louisiana and New Orleans was always going to be the highlight. Were we excited? Well...

I may have squealed embarrassingly at seeing this sign. Unfortunately, after zooming through the states, the windscreen was covered in a thousand splattered little bugs, so it's Bienvenue en Louisiane in bug-o-vision. :D

Oh man oh man oh man!

Finalement! After all these years of waiting for this! What's that, [livejournal.com profile] annemariewrites , you need help navigating the next part? Too bad I've dropped the map in my excitement and you now have to pull over and work things out yourself. >:D

So after all that, and parking! fun! we were at the hotel right in the heart of the French Quarter. It was humid and we were a bit tired and stuff, but we were in New Orleans! First things first:

Beignets! Where have you been all my life? They fix everything, huh, Ava? >:)

Even stupid graffiti can't spoil the beauty.

It's so much like France, and then not. So much like Spain and America, and then not. It's just gorgeous. D:

St. Louis cathedral! I've read about you so much, bb!

And the pungent, evocative Mississippi.

So night was beginning to fall. We wandered through the streets, up Royal (though we saved the full street for one memorable morning) and back towards Jackson Square.

We sat at one of the benches in the shadow of St. Louis and talked. And talked. And talked. We watched people going by and just soaked in the atmosphere. We were pretty tired (I don't know how [livejournal.com profile] annemariewrites has such superhuman driving stamina, I swear) but looking forward to exploring more over the coming days. And we totes did! Photos in the next post. >:D

Great photos! Gawd I miss it. It's been too long. You're stirring up memories.

My favorite part of *going* to NO, as opposed to *being* there (there's too many faves to list in that instance), is before you reach our beloved town, the drive over the bayou when the four lane highway basically turns into a bridge for miles and miles and miles, the little communities that live on the water, and the first glimpses of Spanish moss in the cypresses.

Reminds me.. did you drive across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway? I love it because when you hit a certain point you can no longer see land in any direction.

[identity profile] rebness.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand why you love it so much. It just fills me with excitement thinking about it!

Yes, that's exactly it! I was trying to capture how exciting and different it was as we drove through the Causeway and we were just surrounded by the moss and bridges, and then all that water. The anticipation was almost as sweet as those beignets. Fantastic stuff.

It was definitely like entering a different land, wasn't it?

[identity profile] rebness.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Most definitely. And you know, I just marvelled at how people ever even thought to settle there. The land seems so hostile and so hard to traverse. Even when we went out to Oak Alley one day, we spent ages debating how long it would take to get there from New Orleans and how difficult it would be. And yet, I understand why it drew people. There's simply nothing else like it, you're right.

I had chills of anticipation just for the post. :D I am travelling vicariously here because there's no way I'll ever get to New Orleans. Moar plz! :D

My City of Dreams

[identity profile] versailles-rose.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, how I love New Orleans. Now you know how there is just something about the place that draws you in and finds a place in your heart. I haven't been there for twelve years, and I honestly don't think I'll ever be able to go back. The photos just transport me there. If I close my eyes, I'm sitting on the balcony of the hotel room. Oh, yes. I do love that place.

And - Cracker Barrel! We call it 'The Salt Lick' because of the high sodium, but oh, such good food!

Most definitely. It just didn't feel like anything that came before, or after. It's so unique and I wonder if any other city will excite me as much in my travels through the years. That may sound facetious, but I've been to literally hundreds of cities and never felt like that about any place.

Cracker Barrel is my favourite thing ever. It's probably not the healthiest thing, but it's so good. I have been craving it ever since I last visited it in 2003. >:D

CRACKER BARREL! Tell me, did it have cool wicker rocking chairs and a game of checkers set up outside? Did you buy anything in the shop? Did they have 'Kay's Ice Cream' like they do in Kissimmee, Florida?

Can't wait for more 'tographs! xxx

[identity profile] rebness.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
IT DID, IT DID! And that little peg game! AND LEMONADE THAT'S NOT ACTUALLY LEMONADE, but tastes great! OMG, what is in that lemonade?

I can't remember if they have Kay's ice-cream, but I should've eaten some as a tribute.

More photos tomorrow, innit. >:D

[identity profile] marvystoop.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG! I totes forgot about that peg game! We nicked them from the other tables and were all trying to see who could do it the fastest. Thought about buying one but then realised it would actually stop us living life because those darn pegs are addictive.
I didn't try their lemonade, i can vouch for their good cola though.. mmmmm and the chips! MMMMMM! And the cheeseburgers? McDonalds, take note!

That's okay, we didn't even notice Kay's Ice Cream till we got outside and noticed a mahooossiivee sign. Photo op right there!

I EAGERLY AWAIT! But like, in my sleep and stuff isn't it.

[identity profile] rebness.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, maaaaan. I miss it!

Haha, well, at least you got a photo! >:D

Go and get some sleep, bb, and then there will be moar.

Hee! Waited for the least but not last part of your American Tour entries (at least I think you saved LA for last).

Such a great time you guys had. The pictures are lovely! It seems you may have gotten it all in before the GREAT HEAT WAVE!even if it didn't seem like it. Thanks so much for sharing.

Next adventure? May it be a great one. ♥

... I wanna dance with your sister. Brass bands marchin' by, throwin' notes to the sky! There goes, well there goes, the second-liners and flambeaus. I'm feelin' even better than the day I was made. Here comes, here comes, here comes the big parade!

Here it comes, y'all. Can you see it? Pass me some of that fried chicken. Alright.
