Simba's tribute
My first love, long before writing and self-indulgent fanfic turned my head, was art. I wanted to be an animator when I grew up and nothing relaxes me like painting or sketching something, even now.
I love trawling Deviantart for unique and beautiful artwork as much as I love finding godawful things. Now, I'm not The Greatest Artist ever, so I never criticise the artists but somebody linked to Why Would You Draw That? on Tumblr and I have not stopped laughing. It's fantastic. It's not even the badly-drawn pieces which make me laugh (hey, we all start out terrible and improve) but the really insane ones, the pictures that make you do a double-take because... wat?
Just look at this. Look at it. What's up with Sonic's face? Well, it's furry pr0n. I've cut it as it's NSFW. I don't have anything against furry art; each to their own. But that face is hardly erotic.
I have to share some of these awesome, awesome pictures with you beneath the cut. Tell me if you can figure out what the hell is going on in some of them. Again, NSFW.
This is my favourite one ever, ever, ever. Some angry guy has just catapulted his car into a wall and is pointing a gun at this unassuming chick (who really must have the loudest headphones ever). I dunno why or wat, but I love it.
George is pregnant with John's baby. Aww. Now, again, I'm not squicked by Mpreg but it doesn't stop this being hilar.
But, above all, my favourite fanart is when people use furry characters to express their sadness at an IRL event. I'm honestly fascinated by this stuff and how one decides to honour a former president with a crying, pink-haired dog gazing sadly at his disembodied face floating above some mountains. I hope that they're the Alps or something to compound the wat factor.

Simba is less concerned about beating Scar to a pulp than crying over some soldiers on a training exercise.

I debated whether to post the 9/11 ones because, you know, it's still so raw for so many. But surely there are better ways to express your sadness than Kovu and Kiara standing in the middle of New York?

Or transplanting Sonic to Manhattan.

And a tsunami tribute. I don't know why there's a dead lion or why fire is an effective tribute to a tsunami. Sadly, I can't find any tributes to 7/7. I guess lions don't care about British people.
Also, I was majorly into both The Lion King and Sonic when I was a child. I'm glad I got out.

The 1st one was the best one, just based on artistic value. Even if I have no idea why the car is sliding into the wall and the jogger cant hear it.

Yeah, this is my problem with the art, too. I try not to be snooty about art because many artists are far, far better than I'll ever be and could easily rip mine to shreds... but this stuff is crazy and weird and, yeah, embarrassing.

Oh dear Lord, I've tried that Rule 34 game (albeit on Google images rather than Deviantart). Scarred for life, bb. :|

Having said that, despite the weirdness, all of the above is better than I can draw. :S

Some of the artwork on that site is actually really good. The content of the art, however... hahaha.
Also! I want to talk with you about Let the Right One In some moar once I finish reading the book. I may be hassling you via private messaging, bb.

Yes, yes feel free! Although fair warning, it has been a couple of years since I read it. You might have to jog my memory a bit.
