Guts

Is Chuck Palahniuk’s Guts the most disturbing short story ever? asked Saturday’s Guardian.

Um, yes.

Was it good? I haven't read it. And have you read Diary yet?

I actually got halfway through Diary and then got interrupted by life. I think I'm going to try and finish it this weekend. ;)

God, Grace... you have to read guts! It's got that usual sick attention to detail, the fun narrative, but urgh it's just horrid. Particularly when the accompanying interview revealed it was a true story... :-|

Would you like me to send you a copy? :p

Thanks, but Silver just gave me a link to it. I'll probably take a look at it later tonight.

Yes - I could have gotten through life without that bottom-of-the-pool nightmare scene, let alone anything else. I finished it and put the paper down and instructed the beloved and parents "Do Not Read That. Don't even think of reading it."

I just mailed Silverhawk with the info that the Indy is doing their 'Your Questions Please' on Chuck Palahniuk in two Thursday's time. You can e-mail questions in at
myquestions@independent.co.uk. They pick about a dozen to be answered.

I heart you! :D

Regarding the pool scene: I was sitting there squealing in disgust... you can't even begin to explain it, can you? Lol!

It took me right back to my early teenage when I read the whole output of James Herriot. I never forgot the story of the cow with the prolapsed uterus, and that was just a uterus! Eurghhhh... It drives you do your pelvic floor exercises though!

OMG! *I* had a phase reading James Herriot's entire oeuvre too, although actually I think I got tired of all the bleating sheep and bleeding cows and stopped short of the last few. I totally remember the prolapsed uterus and I think I was even too young to really realise what the uterus did and why it's such a bad thing to be prolapsed. Grossness. And those graphic descriptions of soaping his hands to go right up a cow or sheep...

My godmother once got me a huge book of James Herriot's.

She'd misheard Janes Herbert you see...

Have just finished Chuck's "Surviver." it was...hmmmm.

Okay, not-so-famous link here: James Herriot's son Jimmy used to be our vet and his daughter Rosie was my doctor. We still use the phase 'womiting bad' [pace a famous farmer with his pukey dog] whenever les enfants have a gastric bug.

In an odd way, it was funny and gross at the same time. I think especially the ending.
