Oh, man. I’m loving Casanova on BBC1 right now. This follows on from my Dr. Who squeeage, which was also written by Russell T. Davies. This man is single-handedly saving British television! It’s just so funny, dark and well-scripted—a mix of modern sharpness with the aesthetics of old Venice. Even better, there are moments of high learning juxtaposed against silly humour:
Casanova: (seriously) “Do you know what Casanova means?”
Lady: (intrigued) “No.”
Casanova: “Lucky Bastard.”
Venice is so beautiful. *sigh*. I have to go sooner rather than later, or will pine away for it.
Peter O’Toole has a gentle wit about him as the aged Casanova recounting his heady younger days, which reminds me of something excellent I read the other day:
“TROY actor PETER O'TOOLE walked out of the critically-slammed movie after 50 minutes, because it reminded him of a bread advert.
The veteran British star admits the mega-budget film was so boring to watch, he started conjuring up mental images of a boring TV advertisement for bread company HOVIS - and subsequently walked out of the screening in fits of laughter.
Achilles laying siege to Troy, yesterday.
"I call it Trovis. After watching 50 minutes I found myself in quiet despair, and suddenly that Hovis advert came into my mind over Brad Pitt's face," the actor was quoted by Contactmusic as saying. "I got the chuckles and had to leave," he added.”
Ahahahahaa. It’s just the kind of offbeat humour you’d expect from Casanova. >:)

You know what? It actually means New Castle. (Newcastle!) Which takes the romance out of it a little. (not sure if you're English or have ever been to Newcastle, but hey.)

D'oh! I should have known that. The worst part is, I was thinking about it afterwards and wondering what Casanova did mean. I never though to try breaking the word down, even with knowledge of the Romantic languages.
Oh, well. You learn something new every day.
(Imagines Casanova as a Geordie. o.0)

Oh, and the 2nd episode is even better :)
I read about the fabulous Peter O'Toole and 'Trovis' in this weeks Radio Times, it's got a really good interview with him hat's worth checking out.
Oh, and I think they also used Dubrovnik (spelling?) for some of extra shots of Venice.

Dammit. Dubrovnik needs exploring as well, then. Why does Europe have to have so many beautiful cities? *savesavesave*
(I'll keep a look out for the Radio Times interview. Thanks for the heads-up!)

Oh, I dunno. I think he's really cheeky. He has that young lothario look about him... though you're right, he doesn't look much like those line drawings we have of Casanova! ;)

I think it's a village in Yorkshire, given the sharp slope of the land there, but I may be wrong. It's teh pretteh though, isn't it? Troy and all. :D
