Paris Pics #2

I went along to the Petit Palais. I hadn't bothered with it previously because I didn't think there'd be much there, but I read an article before I went that talked of the great artworks there. Like so many things in Paris, the building is an opulent treat in itself. And it was free to get in -- huzzah! I'm of the opinion that the British model is best with museums -- free entry, with an opportunity to donate, though I'll make an exception for the Louvre. It's a nightmare on free days. Half the world seems to visit.

I came across this statue in the Petit Palais. It was so very striking. It's of Adam and Eve carrying Abel's body after he was slain by Cain. The expression on Adam's face, and Eve's maternal, protective grief just seems so raw. It's a great statue from all angles and now my favouritest evah, even above Michelangelo's Dying Slave.

Waah.

The Musee Carnavalet rocks. It's full of items from Paris' illustrous history, from remnants of the royal statues destroyed in the revolution to models of the Bastille to massive old street signs like this. I wouldn't have liked to walk alongside the shops in those days.

The facade of the Musee Carnavalet. I noticed that [personal profile] ozfille has almost the same picture from her own recent trip to Paris. It's very picturesque... you end up just using too much memory clicking away in Paris.

My hotel room!

Bah. Not really... a replica of Napoleon's chambres at the Louvre. He may have been an angry midget, but he had quite good taste.

So I'm wandering around the Louvre as night falls when I come across this in the French painting section. He sort of reminds me of John Cusack, but above all, I was like, "He's so my Louis!" and took a picture of him. YES, [profile] jaffacakequeen, he is! Louis is hawt and this man was hawt. Nur.

Then it was a trip up the Stairs o'D00m from my Montmartre flat to meet Chris at the Gare du Nord. He still owes me for that -- being harrassed by men at that time of night wasn't really very fun.

There. I had acquired Chris. (Note that he's soaked. Hahahahaa rain!!112) Now it was time to get us the hell to Alsace!

Alsace and Germany next...

The photos are wonderful! (Specially Louis... what do I say? )

Thanks! I really enjoyed it... you forget how beautiful it really is until you're back and look at the pics again.

That man's melancholy face is great.

I love your icon, by the way. I'm really getting into all that Belle Epoque stuff right now.

Beautiful shots. You're quite the photographer. :)

That statue of the Adam, Eve and Abel is quite sad. I love it though.

Why, thankyou. :)

The problem with free museums is that they don't pay da billz. No, rly. My museum is free for local visitors, because the local councils pay us money instead. But it costs a lot to run a museum, especially when there's research being done out the back, and we are poor. We have to make casts of the torsos of local football players and auction them off to raise money for new exhibits. Woe.

Other than that, I like your photos. :D

How dare you see holes in my theory! *Sulks*

Seriously, dude. That sucks. Perhaps a small fee, then? I paid £12 to get into Madame Tussaud's and it was the most rubbish thing I've seen this side of Queen of the Damned. (Saw that the day before. That was not a culturally enlightening weekend.)

Art...

As much as I like museums and such, I tend to visit too many and too large of them on my trips. And after awhile everything starts to look the same. Like in Milan with naked babies pissing and Jesus being crucified about a thousand times. Get's pretty old.

But that statue is just beautiful. So sensitive. There is much force in silence and sometimes we just forget about it. Wow indeed.

[livejournal.com profile] jaffacakequeen has that same problem with museums. I hate that you just have hundreds and hundreds of paintings of the Crucifixion, with Mary weeping, angels crying and all that, and they all look the same and you've paid like 7 Euros to see that?

Agreed about the silence thing. It's just so beautiful, but muted.

I love all your pics here but the Adam/Eve one is amazing. It made me go the same seeing Rodin's Burghers of Calais - I stood looking at it for half an hour and didn't want to leave it behind. *sniff*

That's exactly how I was with it. I just kept gravitating towards that one statue. It's strange - I was beginning to think that I was jaded with sightseeing, that nothing really much surprised me or enchanted me the way it used to, and then I saw this.

Save a copy of the catalogue for when I next visit! LMAO!

Definitely see the Petit Palais-- I really, really think you'd like it.

*swoons* I love you because you have a favourite statue. Also for all this photography... and if you like the icon mentioned above, I think it's safe to say you would generally love Alphonse Mucha's work. I have a book of his stuff and I was drooling over it just the other night. There'll be icons. Soon.

!

LMAO. Thanks. ;)

I'll check out Alphonse Mucha. Thanks for the rec!

Oooh lovely pics once again! That statue is so good but so sad.

Were those the steps from your flat in the picture?

[identity profile] rebness.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The statue pwns all!

Those steps were what I had to climb every time I left my flat to get the metro at Lamarck-Calaincourt. They were just to the left of the square and led up to Sacre-Coeur.
