I'm on the bloody 7am shift for the first time in bloody months. I only flew back from England last night and then I was kept awake by singing Argentinians and my flatmate's dog up until 5am, so it was no surprise when, shuffling like a zombie towards the train station, I somehow ended up on the wrong train and in Ripollet, which is I don't know where, somewhere in Catalonia, I think. It's also in the opposite direction of work. D'oh!

I decided that I should get a taxi on the last leg of the journey as I was already forty minutes late for work. The taxi driver didn't have change of €10. I only had British money and that one note on me, so we reached a stalemate - I wasn't giving a €5 tip and he didn't want to let go of his change. 

So what he did was this: he wrote out a note with his taxi number and the sum and asked me that the next time I got a cab, to please give the €5 then so that his colleague could pass it on. 

My first, shameful thought, was "Ahahaa! Free taxi ride! Sucker!" 

And now I'm sitting here at work, staring at that note and I'll have to pay it because it's such a base, British thing not to pay. Huh.

and yes, thats the british thing to do! pay our debts. i dont think so! however, you may end up having to get the same taxi again and karma and all that. tut.

Of course you should pay him back! Couldn't you have got his name and post it back to him via the taxi company?

I offered all sorts, and he was all, "No, don't worry... just give it to my colleague."

I bet when I pay it, his colleague keeps it and he'll hate me. Woes.

We Brits are an awful lot, aren't we? I do believe in karma, so he's getting that money!

I suppose if I give it and the colleague pockets it, at least my conscience is clear -- but this is this guy's *wage* -- I have to make sure he gets it. I suppose the best I can do is ask for a receipt and the driver's signature so that if I do come across Overly Trusting Cabbie again, I can at least prove I paid?

Is there a card or something identifying the cab driver with a registration number stuck up in the cab? You could take a note of that as well.

I can't believe he didn't like take your name and address and passport no. and make you go to head office and fill out forms and pay them there. That's what would totally happen anywhere else, right?
