Nicki... sigh. Nicki was so obviously depressed and unstable, had brief happiness in Paris before the love of his life went off without him into some amazing new secret life, was snatched by cruel monsters AND THEN had to deal with being a vampire. I think any moral judgment is objectively unfair, especially one relying on a comparison with Louis, who suffered great distress but was a whole lot more together and autonomous to begin with.
As for "Louis survived" and "Louis learned"... Louis survived very much due to fear of killing himself, which is not a failing but hardly a moral victory either. Idk... I remember a time when AR was very down on Louis; if he's a paragon now then perhaps eventually she'll come round regarding Nicolas. Me, I'm just looking forward to meeting him again in the re-read...
