So, Memoirs of a Geisha. Some people had said it was really slow at first, but though there was a noticeable lag in the middle, I really enjoyed it. I never did pick up Arthur Golden's book, even if I did adore it for driving sales up when I worked for WHSmith, so I think I'll add that to my 2006 reading list. I don't really have that much to say on it, given that I was ignorant of anything pertaining to geisha culture beforehand, but it did leave me feeling distinctly embarrassed with some aspects of Western culture. Ho hum.

I really, really need to see Brokeback Mountain, but Chris just isn't up for that. [livejournal.com profile] jaffacakequeen, fancy a trip to the cinema for some hot Gyllenhaal stuff?

In other news, our central heating is still off. My lips are chapped from the cold that made me hardy in our pre-central heating days when I was a child. Today, I had to boil three huge pans and the kettle to get a few inches of hot water-- of course, in the chill English January air, the water was freezing within minutes. I feel like I'm doing research for some 18th-century fic, what with the freezing old cottage, the boiling of water for baths and the general misery of realising how heavily reliant I am upon modern commodities. Well, until my mother pointed out that this house originally had a fireplace in every room to keep out the cold. We sacrificed reliable heat sources for a bookshelf! Woe!
