Well, I'm off to Alsace next week for a sabbatical, by which I mean lovely mountains and Colmar and Mulhouse and Strasbourg and general Alsatian excellence. I should be saving now. I shouldn't contemplate other trips abroad until afterwards, right?

£130.

£130 for six nights in Rome, with regional flights, transfers and funky accommodation close to Vatican City. In May. Of course, [livejournal.com profile] jaffacakequeen and I booked. OMFG ROMA!

Hey, I used to live in Mulhouse! :-)

You did? Bloody hell! How did you like it? Were you studying there? I first went there in January of last year-- spent a nice day wandering around the old square checking out the beignet stand and drinking a nice hot chocolat. ;)

I was studying there for half a year. I lived about 10-15 minutes from town in the direction of the university right next to the canal. Even though it's not a very pretty city by tourism standards, I found lots of parks and green spaces to relax, and I regularly fed the swans and ducks at the canal. :-)

I used to sit on the steps of that temple and read all the time, once it was nicer out. When it's not so cold, there are stands there all the time with people selling sausages and jams and fresh fruit and veg. There's another big market three days a week where you can get loads of fresh produce and meat products, but also a lot of North African goods (like gorgeous tea sets).

I'm thinking about going back in May so that I can hit the old haunts. It's been over three years since I've been there, and they had been talking about putting in a tram system and the likes. It'll be interesting to see what's changed. :-)

Here's a link to some pics I uploaded of Mulhouse in my 2005 end-of-year review, as well:

Marooned on the far side of the world and turning slowly green with envy.

But then [personal profile] rebness like all residents of the UK will be deprived of our new super shiny ads promoting Oz, because the ads are considered too rude for delicate English, Welsh, Scots and Northern Irish ears. They will not hear the dulcet tones asking "Where the bloody hell are you?" in our most cultured tones. How can we expect these poor benighted people to truly understand the wonders of Oz? *g*

... seriously? Hmm. Possibly a bad choice of slogan there, Tourism Australia. But still, how can anyone really be offended at "bloody" these days? This seems like a case of "picking and choosing" what to take or leave from our culture. I mean, oh, sure, they like Steve Irwin because he works with cute and weird animals and says "crikey", but they can't handle a real ocker phrase. Pommie bastards*.

*with the exception of Becky, and all other UK residents who read this. Unless you're uptight whinging Poms.

Oh yeah, they had something about this on our local radio. Considering some of the lewd stuff that turns up on the likes of BBC Radio 1 on a fairly regular basis, I can't imagine why they think delicate British people will keel over at the word "bloody". *shrugs*

Wow £130! I'm very jealous but it sounds like you'll have such a good time in Rome.

Enjoy your holiday next week. Are you by any chance taking your funky new digital camera with you to take lots of nice pics? (How's that for subtlety eh! :D)

The shiny new camera will be recording my shiny new trip, and then it will be posted to my shiny livejournal so I can gloat. :D
