Wait, wait a minute. This is all wrong. Politics on a Sunday can never be a good thing.

However:

1. Bonfire Night! I shall ignore my father's rant about it being a completely anti-Catholic celebration and stuff to marvel at fireworks and eat sexy jacket potatoes and chestnuts. Besides, nobody ever remembers the nasty second verse, anyway.

2. The death penalty for Saddam? Yes, yes. I know. It's supposedly 'Iraqi justice', let them get on with it, etc. The timing is completely irrelevant to any elections elsewhere in the world and it doesn't reflect at all badly on the western world that we just sit by while this crude circus goes on. Ahem.

Er, toffee apple, anyone?

How do they do the chestnuts there? Are they roasted? God, I love those things. Have a great time tonight :)

Roasted, usually. They're so good, aren't they? And thanks. :D

The whole death-by-hanging thing would seem incongruous except that the U.S., clearly a huge force behind the whole trial, is I think one of the only members of the "coalition of the willing" (*blech*) where the death penalty still exists. In fact, certain states still list hanging as a means of execution, although in practice it doesn't happen. Other means: electrocution, lethal injection, firing squad. None of them are good, that's for sure.

Funny, I was just reading about Guy Fawkes night on Wikipedia. I love bonfires. As for chestnuts, somehow I had never actually eaten any (despite all the hawkers in NYC) until last year when I was in Munich during the Christmas markets. Caleb thought they were totally gross but I thought they were pretty yummy. They call them Maroni there I think. And other chestnut trivia? I got into a whole thing with a friend in England about conkers. That game has got to be one of the most English things ever.

It's interesting to note Britain's stance on this. We signed away the right to ever even reintroduce the death penalty in the UK, even in terms of treason. To be a member of the EU, a country must also abolish the death penalty (hence the demands with Turkey) so of course, this verdict goes against our very charter. Conveniently, we've managed to distance ourselves from it and Blair can trumpet that he was tried and found guilty under Iraqi justice, but even to be associated with the death penalty when we're so very against it when it suits us leaves a nasty taste in the month. It's not even the *means* that is so contentious, just the very fact of killing. It'll be interesting to see what Blair says when people inevitably protest.

Conkers! Every English child must play that! LOL!

I've had chestnuts all over the place, but I contend that the absolute best chestnuts I have ever eaten are the ones I purchased from the German markets that visit Manchester every year. And oh, boy... I'll be getting some of them again this year.

Enjoy the fireworks tonight. It may once have been anti-Catholic but (and this is just my own perspective) nowadays I think that it's more of an excuse to have a bonfire and fireworks than anything else. Plus, after the government's inept handling of the Iraq crisis, I'm sure that people look quite fondly on someone attempting to blow up the parliament!

Save me a toffee apple will you?
