Oh, wow. [livejournal.com profile] kristoferllama and I signed up for an evening Russian course at Liverpool university a few weeks ago, on the dubious premise that the Japanese course was fully-booked. However, though I missed the first lesson due to being MIA, I really, really enjoyed tonight's lesson. There were so many great things. I loved being back amongst acadaemia. I loved the sexy men on campus with their pretentious scarves and glossy long hair and winter coats. A wave of nostalgia swept over me when we met our classmates; the over-eager overachiever; the man with the constant stupid questions; the cool Spanish lady and Svetlana, our Rrrrrrussian tutor.

I'm really enjoying it, and we've agreed to abandon our planned Finnish trip this winter to go and take in some Russia, like. We learned stuff with funky pronunciation. I rejoiced that Russian lacks the annoying rules of so many other languages such as those damned participles and articles. We watched a fun documentary where Soviet Russia Learns You, to a soundtrack of Back in the USSR.

Afterwards, I treated myself to some curry and chips from the fabled Athena (legendary kebabs). On the way back home, some drunk guy serenaded all the passengers with When You Were Sweet Sixteen. Some Chavs at the bus-stop were all, "Hey, girl! Would you go into the offie for us?"

Ah, it was like being back at uni all over again. *wipes tear* :

Mm, 6 cases and complex rules about transitive and intransitive, and just wait till you need to translate a present participle when Russian don't have 'em... ::grin:: Sounds like lots of fun though, I'm most envious as I do miss my Russian and being able to take evening classes and stuff. Post lots than I can enjoy it vicariously? And yay on plans for Russian holidays.

I shall indeed post more about it. I really like it and I didn't realise it would be so interesting.

(Also, stop scaring me! Transitive sounds intimidating. And also like a truck.) ;)

I think you'd really like it -- it's so different from all the Romance languages and such, and it just seems really useful. Particularly if one visits Russia... heehee!

I know what you mean about going there. It just fascinates me, plus, vodka! Ehehee.

Ah! Russian is so much fun!

It makes you so proud when you can write things down that look so...well...foreign. Haha.

I kind of wish I'd stuck it out at university because I really enjoyed it. But then the French was killing me so I left. ^__^

I'd love to try Japanese though. I feel like I might actually use that language if I knew it.

Hee! That's exactly it. I can't tell you how proud I am that I can finally understand the text in my icon and now that I know it's less some scary revolutionary thing and just something to do with books.

Japanese would be brilliant. I do still wish that I had been able to get on that course (especially since I'm planning on visiting Japan next year with friends) but, you know... it'll come around again.

Ha ha,

Russian is so much fun, although a little hard. The whole Soviet propaganda video was very interesting. What did you think Comrade?

I'm hoping I like it, although it was easy the first week, now I am getting confused already after the second week.

The class are on the whole a bunch of tards, and super biff buy needs a punch and super super mangement wench needs a good hard slapping round the ears with a wet fish. There are some nice people and Svetlana is nice, although a little scary with her Communist views (you missed it last lesson!)

Can't wait to go back next time, although I am going to have to do some serious revision if we are heading over to Moskova sometime soon.

L8rs Tardette.

Strange...

Must be because Russia is our neighbour that I have never had a real interest towards the country or their language. In fact it is propably last in my list of countries to see which is terrible because I know they have lot to offer.

Good luck with your trip plans though :)

You'll have to let me know if they dig out this old Russian learning video from the 1970s. It was still going strong when my friend starting learning Russian about 5 years ago. It's called Goodbye Summer and stars Victor and Olga. It's so cheesy it's just fabulous! :D
