I am rubbing my hands together with glee at the revelation that Harold from Neighbours is to turn into evil!Harold. I am almost tempted to become a student again in order to spend mornings with the curtains closed and a pot noodle with toast in hand, watching rubbish soaps and daytime talk shows, though, alas, the buffoonish and supremely stupid Robert Kilroy-Silk is no longer on-air.

Harold gobbles like a turkey. Not that I watch Neighbours. Why do you all love Neighbours so much? :( I cannot escape! Waah!

It is The Greatest! Seriously!

Remember... the big storyline over who Bouncer really loved?

Harold and his missing memory!

Kerry wouldn't wear shoes? The dastard!

You're missing out, you know...

I have *no* clue about storylines. Much less characters. Honestly. At least you don't watch Home and Away... but their theme song is catchy.

BECKY SMASH!

Er...uh... I mean-- I am very pleased for you, although I am, of course, extremely happy to live in such a beautiful place as England, with all its gleaming frost and the...er...refreshing Artic winds and that pretty, pretty rain.

Now, please excuse me whilst I go off to curse your nam-- tell my colleagues about how lucky you are. :)

It is absolutely brilliant! I haven't been transfixed this much by a Neighbours storyline since that time Flick broke a nail.

*Imagines evil!Harold doing evil! things. Like...er... he leaves the top off the milk. The camera pans in to an evil sneer that makes him look more like a mole blinking.*

You'll get your own back -- one day, when I get to England, I'll spend every day whinging to you about your crappy weather and beaches. Yeah, you know it.

Still, I feel so refreshed after my afternoon lying on warm sand and slipping through ice-cold glassy waves. Did I mention that I have a lovely swimming pool in my backyard? And I swam in it all weekend? Because I do, and I did.

Looking forward to evil!Harold myself. So long as Karl and Susan don't leave, we don't mind. And we like to see Cassie every now and again. (And little Audrey making her solitary way home.) If only Karl would sing 'Click go the shears...' again on the front lawn to Grandpa Tom, his drinking habit might cease and all would be well....

Don't you just adore Neighbours?

Or you could listen to Karl (Alan Fletcher) singing his own peacenik anti-attack-on-Iraq songs on his website http://www.alanfletcher.net/index2.html . We need a The Right Prescription album right now, with 'Free Like a River' on it. I'm an uncurable Neighb's junky - 17 years now.

Neighbours! The Convicts' Revenge. We have overcome British minds with mindless soap and infected British children with a rising inflection at the end of their sentences. Can never work that one out. Most of the television I see from the UK is usually very good and I can see no reason why you would want to watch this show? My only guess is that your soaps are so depressing, that Neighbours and others of its ilk at least don't make you feel miserable, on top of your English weather.

Serious answer ahoy! I don't believe the 'weather' angle - personally I like our weather system - rain and fog and all - and the beach on 'Neighbours' always looks breezy and cool rather than baking hot! I'm more with the misery angle. Most UK soaps are just about stupid UK people being totally over-the-top and vile with each other (especially Eastenders, which I used to watch and kind-of enjoy). There is hardly a redeeming virtue to scrape together between all the characters. Neighbours may have its detractors in the way of reptitive/daft 'story-lines' but the acting style is honest work-a-day stuff, the actors really seem to work as a team and enjoy what they're doing and the pleasure of the storylines are unsophisticated, simple honest fare. Call me a sap, but I like the 'pull-together' ethic that surfaces every so often and the reliability of 'good' characters like Harold, and the example of the occasionally shaky but essentially *good* marriage of Karl and Susan. We watch this every day with our kids and I have to say they get more moral virtue out of Harold and co. than they do out of most of the rest of the UK's TV programming (of course most of them are a little young to appreciate the good documentaries yet). What we impose on them as viewing habits will stay with them as strong memories, and I'd rather these were of the foolish but sacrificial Harold, the over-protective but loving Lynnie & Joe, than of the low-grade whoring and couldn't-care attitudes of other soap characters

Must be that good old Australian cringe kicking in where we hate to be looked down as unsophisticated and dumb! Well if you had some of your most well known identities as dumb as Steve Irwin! Uggh! Can't stand the man, never could. But the Americans loved him and so he gained some sort of a following here, though I think most people here still thought he was stupid interfering with poisonous or toothy reptiles. Baby Bob in the crocodile pen spiked his chances as being named as Australian of the Year, thank heavens. But we still ended up with another bloody sportsman. Steve Waugh maybe an OK cricketer and his charity work in India is admirable but I'm sure there must have been someone else other than him who was more deserving of the honour.

And as for the beach, well it is shot in Melbourne and all the best beaches are further north. I agree the occasional fog and rainy day is pleasant, but I'm not sure I could handle it more than the very occasional day. I get a bit blue after 2 or 3 days of rainy, overcast weather.
