I can't believe Brian Jacques is dead!

I grew up on the Redwall series and adored him as a child. Okay, the books got a litle samey in the end and I grew to dislike the black-and-white characterisation but he really inspired me to read. He also did a radio show for Mersey radio and I used to insist my dad put it on each Sunday morning. Never mind that I didn't get the jokes, it was Brian Jacques, my hero!

He also used to volunteer with the Royal School for the Blind in Liverpool, where my aunt was working as a doctor. He was delighted when she told him I loved his work and signed all my copies of his books with 'To my pal Becky.' It was such a lovely thing to do.

I want to go home and weep. The man was my first hero. Rest in peace, Brian.

He came to our school for the day, about 20 years ago, to tell stories and inspire children to write. And they did because he was so inspiring. He talked the hindleg off a donkey all day long, one tale leading into the next as he thought of something else. Brilliant storyteller. I had read Redwall while being confined to a hospital bed awaiting the arrival of our baby and was transported to his world. When I told him this, he signed my copy with a lovely note wishing our daughter well for the future. A really interesting writer and man.
