I dug out a DVD of ace Spanish cartoon from my childhood days, Dogtanian. This funky programme was an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' D'artagnan, only cooler. With animals. And the voice actors having to speak reallyreallyreally fast to keep up with the Spanish animation.

It got me searching online for some information on it, and, lo and behold, I am across this most excellent site.

Not only do we get the usual nostalgia and the very true rantings about how the kids' programmes of the eighties are inherently superior to today's fodder, but we get clips! Pictures! Theme tunes! Everything's there-- from Dungeons & Dragons to The Raccoons to the infuriatingly long and ugly series Ulysees. In particular, I've fallen in love with The Mysterious Cities of Gold all over again. What a great series... I always wanted me a magic flying robot eagle.

Hell, yeah!

Did anyone ever see the last episode of Mysterious Cities of Gold? Can anyone tell me what happened? I was probably in detention or fighting with my sister that day or something.

Gonna come back later tonight and comment on this. I was addicted to Dogtanian. I have Dogtanian pencils and rulers and I keep the pencils going that little bit longer by hardly ever sharpening them. Loved Aramis.

I had a crush on Aramis!

Boy, did my mum have some explaining to do...heehee..

OMG I watched them all I loved them and for the life in me I can't remember. I bet you can buy it on video.

You can't. :-(

There's an online petition to get an English-language release. You can get it in French as it was originally a French cartoon, but that's so very much effort.

Cat! You have to go and listen to the tune...

Memories/light the corners of my mind...

I loved Dogtanian, it was just so cool and really rather gay.

Loved Cities of Gold, but can't actually remember much other than the theme tune also can't remember if it was slashy or not, damn!

And I wanted to be in Dungeons and Dragons pretty sure that was pure slash too

I actually watched Danger Mouse last night, did you know that half the time when Penfold calls Danger Mouse "DM" it sounds like he's calling him "Dear"- but then we always knew they were gay :)

And is this reminding anyone else of the great british institution of 'lets-talk-about-kiddies-tv-shows-whilst-drunk-and-down-the-pub'?

LMAO! Yes! My flatmates and I used to watch Button Moon and Will O' The Whisp...lol.

When I got the Dogtanian DVD, my 28-year-old brother could barely contain himself! He was all, "Man! I have to watch these!"

Dogtanian is very gay. Aramis is the gayest in it, though.

No gayness in Cities of Gold... except maybe those two Spanish sailors who always managed to run off and find a dark corner somewhere... ooh, suits you, sir!

I don't know some of these other cartoons (D&D vaguely recall), but Danger Mouse is still on!?

I loved that as a kid. I suppose it's only on in Britain, my luck..

No, Dangermouse is only on as repeats in Britain, and even then only on Sky/Cable. That was the best! Sarcastic British humour...

Dogtanian and Cities of Gold were European productions, so probably not exported to America, although Cities of Gold seems to have American fans, so maybe that was shown? It's quite an old cartoon now-- bloody hell! -- 22 years!

I feel. So. Old.

Hmm... I shall check the DM thing for you. I think it's available on European discs, but shall check for Region 1...

Glad to be of service. heh. Thank goodness everyone tells me I don't LOOK 37 at all, or I might be depressed. ;)

Thank you much for looking that up!

If you could watch R2 DVD's I'd say go here DANGER MOUSE but you can't (for those who can they are on special offer). You can get it from Ebay (It hasn't been officially released on R1 format). This auction has 132 mins running time. This one is for 6 eps on VHS. And this I would imagine is the whole series on DVD but costs $80 so it depends how much you love DM.

Children of the Sun
See your time has just begun
Searching for your ways
Through adventures everyday

Every day and night
With the condor in flight
With all your friends in tow
We search for the Cities of Gold

Ahhhh-ah-ah-ah-ah
Wishing for the Ci-ties of Go-old
Ahhh-ah-ah-ah-ah
Someday we will find
The Ci-ties of Go-old!

I haven't checked out your link yet - but Aramis - wah!... and I loved the Louis XVI and Duke of Buckingham too. I didn't really get into Mysterious Cities of Gold but Dungeons and Dragons definitely. And before that, Battle of the Planets of course, which was eversogay.

See, I was always under the impression that it was the unfortunate Louis and Marie-Antoinette of the revolutionary period, but when I watched it yesterday, I was all, "d'oh!"

This is great, though. Am learning more about French history via a fun cartoon... though I don't think Henri of Navarre was quite so cuddly in real life. ;-)

Decent 80s kids TV for me is restricted to Danger Mouse, SuperTed and Puddle Lane. Oh, and The Flumps, of course!

Now, for really good stuff, you need the 70s - in approximate date order: The Herbs, Noggin the Nog, The Magic Roundabout, Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine, Paddington, Rhubarb and Custard and the one with Noah and Nellie.

Long live the memory of Oliver Postgate (or is he still alive?) Them were the days!

Waah. I missed out on the seventies stuff, but I adored SuperTed. Spotty was scary, though. Always reminded me of that time I got measles...

Texas Pete! What a dickwad!

Bagpuss was pretty cool, though. A guy in my glass had that same mournful face.

I'm with you on the seventies. And Pipkins. And The Changes by Peter Dickinson - terrified me.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!

*calms self*

The only thing it doesn't have is Belle And Sebastien, which also rocked. But... oh my. I will probably waste indecent amounts of time at that site. And DVDs!!!

Right, that's my happiness sorted for the rest of the weekend then. :-)
