Another year over, and what have I done?
Dec. 21st, 2004 10:08 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?
Broken a bone
Been on television
Saw a wild fox that was actually alive for one
Seen Versailles
Been to Spain
Learnt Spanish and German
Been to the Musee D’Orsay
Worked for Mental Health
Ate quail eggs
Had a bilingual argument
Seen the Trossachs
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Nope, but I’m already working on 2005’s resolution, so we’ll see.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No, but nyalko80 is about to give birth. SQUEE.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Touch wood…
5. What countries did you visit?
France and Spain. Eh. Spain I fell in love with, actually, after so many years of considering it “beneath” me.
6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?
Absence of crazy people.
7. What date(s) from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Various, mainly newsworthy issues.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting a pretty good, well-paid job with lovely people, and also carryondancing, which started off as a fun idea between friends for our own perverse pleasure and which I now feel is going from strength to strength. I never knew my friends could be so consistently funny.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not erasing loonies from my life earlier.
10. Did you suffer any illness or injury?
Broke my thumb (that fecking HURT) and suffered from some crazy viral infection for about two months. Also got food poisoning. Poor body.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Some books, my Barcelona scarf, my funky Spanish ring.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Various people. In real life, baxilicious, Debs, Neil, Kt, my evil sister Rachael, whom I never knew could be so defensive, my brother Paul, Pen (a rock)
sc1ssors1ster, Kay and my friend Julie. Online, most people, including
anginvisible and the lovely
avariecaita, a true friend whose wise words prevented me from breaking out the knives…
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Dumb and Dumber, Déjà vu girl and her accomplice, Wormtongue. Ha. Apart from that, Dubya, Blair—the usual suspects.
14. Where did most of your money go?
On various things. I have absolutely no idea.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Barcelona, television appearances, Jacklet.
16. What song will always remind you of 2004?
“Flowers in the Window” by Travis, “Sunny Afternoon” will always remind me of sitting outside the Cunard building with squishypeanut and anything by Franz Ferdinand.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier, but darker
ii. thinner or fatter? I don’t even want to know
iii. richer or poorer? Richer
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
More time doing crazy stuff in summer
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Angsting, worrying, not exercising.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
At home with my family. ^-^
22. Did you fall in love in 2004?
Nah.
23. How many one-night stands?
What do you take me for!
24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Peep Show
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Hate is such a strong word. But I wouldn’t weep if certain people were run over by a combine harvester. Hate? No; they’re really not worth my time. :p
26. What was the best book you read?
Probably Corfu.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Libertines, Damien Rice, A Perfect Circle
28. What did you want and get?
Spain, some cool reading from saffronlie, the funniest letters ever from
sc1ssors1ster and a music rescue pack from
squishypeanut
29. What did you want and not get?
Johnny Depp?
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Lost in Translation.
31. What did you do on your birthday?
I went to Manchester for a meal with Pen, Cat and Sara, before going to see Lost in Translation and then enjoying some drinks and silliness.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A different result for the US election.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?
Whatever.
34. What kept you sane?
My good friends, my family, my little dog.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Mr. Jake Gyllenhaal. Wrrow.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The US election. Broke my heart, and that’s why US politics will not enter my journal again.
37. Who did you miss?
Nobody. Those who left truly needed to.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
The brilliant pandorasblog, a funny, pleasant, loyal friend, and one that always seems to be on my wavelength. If she lived on this island, I’d totally go and hug her.
zhonghua2000, whom I am really growing to respect and love, new CoD player Lauren, and all the new additions to my friends list. Tons of people offline, including Julie, who believed in my abilities and gave me a chance when I was feeling jaded, Marj, sarcastic, funny defender of Brits, the other Julie, Kay and Kelly (yes, they count, because I hadn’t met them in RL before), Alan, Janine. And, finally, my Alsatian, Jack. Absolutely nuts, a pain, but lovely.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004:
Friends are important; without some of them, I doubt I could have been in the same place this year that I am now. Family, above all, will always stand by me. I have learned—and it’s a harsh lesson, and one that I am surprised to learn when I felt pretty certain I knew everything I need to—not to take pity on friendless people. They’re usually friendless for a reason. I leave 2004 darker, but stronger, certain of the love and the loyalty of many people. I think this year has changed me fundamentally, and perhaps not always for the better—but it certainly makes me determined to borrow from Polonius and always stick to the saying “to thine ownself be true.”
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I’m a survivor!
Overall, a sucky year to start with, but with more than a smattering of very good stuff towards the end, and that’s what to be grateful for, right? Here’s to 2005.
