A quiet night in. The French Quarter was sweltering in the August heat, and the maddening whirr of the fan nearly drowned out the television in the parlour.

We had chosen a DVD from Louis’ alarmingly large collection (He’s an unashamed technology fiend.) The title didn’t sound too promising—Velvet Goldmine – but, Dieu, was I enjoying it now.

I watched the dark, androgynous actor, enraptured. “You know, Louis,” I said, turning to him, “he reminds me of someone.”

He rolled his eyes.

“And look at those costumes.” I paused. "Louis..."

He raised an eyebrow at me. "Not even for you."
