It was incredibly easy to remain cynical about Live 8 when Will Smith tried to rally people across America, Europe and Asia to click their fingers, then to spoil the moment by going on and on about his hometown. The concept of the three-second thing resonates, but it's too easy to dismiss the concerts as a stunt or ultimately worthless (as alleged in the media) when one doesn't have to put faces to the dead.

It was quite another thing when Bob Geldof brought on a beautiful young Ethiopian woman who was captured on film as a mere baby close to death from starvation, declaring that she had survived through the help of Live Aid. Oh, God. Please let more lives be saved because of this. We owe it to that gorgeous young woman who spoke so earnestly.

Still not buying Madonna's new accent, though.

ETA: Peter Kay-- LMFAO!! He's going to be in so much trouble. >:)

I loved the part where nine countries clicked their fingers in unison, and when they brought her onto the stage I hope the cynics at last realised that ONE is priceless.

However Snoop sucks.

Word. I can't describe the feeling of euphoria and thankfulness that she had survived-- really brought home Geldof's reasoning and the terrible cost of each human life lost.

LMAO! I loved Snoop shouting "motherfucker!" to a London crowd that sometimes appeared baffled.

WHERE be the Scissor Sisters, is my question. *Waits impatiently*

I thought that was a beautiful moment to bring that woman on stage, to the world. Are you listening world?

It's horrible to think that the fate of further people like her rest, in the end, on a dozen or so people. But God, she looked so happy and so healthy and so... alive. I can't imagine anyone not being touched by that.

At the end of the day it's stupid that she even had to be brought before their eyes just to prove there's good coming from all of this, but in the face of what is happening and what is being ignored I'm glad she was there. And I'm mostly happy that she, and some others, will have survived. Though more would have if these people weren't off playing golf or whatthehellever.

Oh, right... Madge is talking like a Brit now, isn't she?...
Hoping for a guest spot on Dr. Who??

She talks...very...slowly...so...that...she'll...get...the...British...accent...right, not realising we actually speak quite fast and low.

However, that said... I'm glad she's given her time for Live 8. She should just sing rather than speak. ;)

As she's so good with her ahem standard English accent, I reckon she should try doing a regional British accent. Perhaps Noddy Holder or Ozzy Osbourne could be her role models!

Owright...ow...am...yow?*

*= Hi, how are you? (Translation from the Midlands dialect into English)

I've just now found the www.one.org website wherein I signed the petition. Foolish American that I am, I was baffled that I wasn't being asked to send my money somewhere. The U.S. has proposed additional monies in not that small of an amount in aid to Africa as well, so I guess if Live 8 is after the Governments to clear this up-- it's apparently working. I am hoping that this will bring attention to WORLD poverty, aids, hunger, etc. even that which is in our own backyards.

My this is a volatile subject. Hopefully the volatility of it will help. Once Live 8 is over though, WE (you & I) mustn't forget or we'll be doing this for the 3rd time in another 20 years.

I don't understand how it really raises money, aside from people buying their tickets, and that seemed much more motivated by a desire to see an awesome line-up of artists. Do the telecasts include lines to call to donate?

Tickets weren't bought, you entered a competition by text (£1.50) or free through the post so it really wasn't about raising money but spreading awareness in time for the G8 summit. In the words of the Bob "Not charity but justice"

I guess that's fair enough, to raise awareness more than anything else... it just doesn't seem very productive to me, but hey, Australia isn't one of the big 8 so that doesn't really matter.
