Met up with jaffacakequeen on Saturday, for general Manchester goodness. SOMEBODY WAS LATE, so I ended up half-sozzled in The Oyster Bar beforehand, though I did have a nice chat with some Americans and then a couple of nice old people. Everyone's so much nicer in the sun, yo. In defence of my friend, she atoned for her tardiness by trying the delights of sushi at Yo! Sushi with me. Granted, she stuck to teriyaki chicken and noodles, but she had to be applauded for attempting to eat chocolate mousse with chopsticks. Mad woman. <3

After that, we had a gossipy catch-up, and the rest of the weekend involved Chinese takeaway, The Dukes of Hazzard (cheesy peas, but fun) and a certain bitter sitcom.

On Sunday, we paid a visit to one of Manchester’s art galleries and saw some great works-- Hylas and the Nymphs is a permanent favourite of mine, but check out this work about Manchester glass-blowers by Mervyn Peake. Yeah, him of Gormenghast fame. The character actually reminded us both of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (who starred in the television series of Gormenghast a few years ago) so it was suitably eerie/cool:



There was also another painting in there that was extremely striking. It's called Infante Egaree (The Distraught Infanta) and is just... weird. We had seen the preview for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride the night before, and we couldn't help but draw comparisons-- we wondered if this was one of the sources where Tim Burton got his inspiration from:







Finally, I know I owe some of you e-mails, and I’ll get to writing them now in the sultry September heat. (Oh, yes, Indian summer!)

There is, of course, a lot to say about New Orleans. But that deserves its own suitably enraged entry.

And that other painting is cool, in a weird sort of way. It almost looks like it's a painting of an actual sculpture made from paper, or sheet metal, or something like that. Someone should build it! :D

It sounds like you had a great time in Manchester.

The paintings are very interesting. I saw a trailer for Corpse Bride when I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the other week so I know what you mean about the second painting.
