Bleh. First proper day back at work. Somebody 'cleaned' my desk, which basically means that my address book has gone missing, my report folder was stuffed in my Drawer of Deliberately Missing Items and that my desk is eerily, horribly clean.

I used to hate January, what with the grey skies and such, and the dreaded office clearout, but... I have discovered some cool things about this month:

1. Dear lord-- it's light at half past four in the afternoon!

2. I finally found out why January is called January! It's named after the deity "Janus", a two-headed god who looked back on the old year and forward to the new year. [/geek]

3. Um...that's about it.

This, however, is enough. I also have Switzerland to look forward to on my birthday, which means getting drunk in German. Oh, yes. That. I suppose it would do to actually listen to my brother Paul's German lessons right about now.

Switzerland! Squee.

(That's so January, dude. Mary and I are planning to go to Belfast in February. Ha!)

Yep. English day names are derived after the Norse Gods, presumably because England was invaded by the Vikings and Scandinavian and German conquerors.

We determined that the Latin languages references the Graeco-Roman Gods, didn't we, so that Lundi, Mardi, Mercredi, etc. all bore relation to the Spanish days of the week.

The big question is-- Why is April so-called? I know the other months, but not that! >:

April -- Aphrodite's month
Old English April(is)
Latin Aprilis
Etruscan Apru
Greek Aphro, short for Aphrodite.
Aprilis had 30 days, until Numa when it had 29 days, until Julius when it became 30 days long.

Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love and beauty. She is identified with the Roman goddess Venus.

Karen, what would I do without you?

*Mwah!*

Am now fully clued-up for if I ever get to go on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Or to show off down the pub, either/or. ;)

What I find most interesting is that the days of the week in each language are named after gods and goddesses who appear to correspond across the languages. Like how Thor, as the Norse/English sky god is more or less the equivalent of Jupiter, and they share the same day of the week. I don't know how much of an argument can be made for each culture being influenced by another, but the convergence is striking.

YES.

That is why it's all so fascinating. No, am not being facetious-- it's interesting to see the correlation in the naming of the days. One culture surely must have drawn from the other?

Why isn't there a day named Grendel? >:

That would totally be my favourite day of the week.

That was the high point of my report on paganism. And something about Eostre being a possible dawn goddess and inspiration for the naming of Easter, but I have to check back on that one.

You should name your least favourite day of the week Grendel-day. Hey, today's Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Thursday should totally be Grendel-day. It always foxes you into thinking it's Friday. >:

Hi, I'm late to the party - per usual. However, Grendel ... how I love thee! Let me count the ways!

1) You're big and mean and *argh with the teeth*
2) You're a mama's boy
3) You killed 'em good before that Beowulf guy came along. TWELVE WINTERS OF GOOD KEEEEELING!
4) You're very clean
5) There's an entire book devoted just to you and your pain
6) You broke my heart

I'd also like to add my two cents on the days thing:

All the romance languages are related, therefore, they share the naming of the days. Latin gave to French, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, and Portugese. When said lands were duly conquered, they took on the mantels of their oppressors. Now, if only I could spell - I'd be set for life!

Grendel was my favourite monster ever. He was all, "I keeeeeel you" for years and years and years, until that git Beowulf decided to rip his bleedin' arm off. >:

And yes! He loved his mummy. He's the best monster around.

Agreeness on the Latin languages! But, smartypants, why does Japanese also correspond to some stuff for the days of the week? Brilliant!

That one's easy = collective conscious.

See, I really should be wearing the pants in this relationship. >:D

Perhaps, but I'm a cusp baby. In the end - I just want to rule the world, but give orders for others to do it for me!
