Bleh. First proper day back at work. Somebody 'cleaned' my desk, which basically means that my address book has gone missing, my report folder was stuffed in my Drawer of Deliberately Missing Items and that my desk is eerily, horribly clean.

I used to hate January, what with the grey skies and such, and the dreaded office clearout, but... I have discovered some cool things about this month:

1. Dear lord-- it's light at half past four in the afternoon!

2. I finally found out why January is called January! It's named after the deity "Janus", a two-headed god who looked back on the old year and forward to the new year. [/geek]

3. Um...that's about it.

This, however, is enough. I also have Switzerland to look forward to on my birthday, which means getting drunk in German. Oh, yes. That. I suppose it would do to actually listen to my brother Paul's German lessons right about now.

Switzerland! Squee.

(That's so January, dude. Mary and I are planning to go to Belfast in February. Ha!)

Look on it this way, Cat-- it's a new year and, quite possibly, a new beginning. 2004 was the Year From Hell for lots of people. Keep your chin up and try to make this year one that you'll look back on fondly this time in 2006.

It's £4.50 to Belfast, Pen! BARGAIN. >:)

We've decided to go on crazy day trips all year, or even just for a one-night stay. Doubtless you'll be dragged along at some point...muhahahaha!

The entire office apparently used 'my' desk as a dumping ground. There are files everywhere but no one's told me if I have to do anything with them. Do you want to know why Friday is called Friday?

Date: 2005-01-05 11:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rebness.livejournal.com
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] verastar99, I know that Friday is named after Venus in French and Spanish, but I have no idea what it's named after in English! Waah!

I know Thursday is after Thor, but that's about it. Enlighten me, oh desky one.

Well the meaning is derived from the Teutonic Version of the Goddess of Love, Freya.

It must be the day that you frig!

Here is some info I found at a site on the meaning of days -

Friday -- Freya's day
Middle English fridai
Old English frigedæg "Freya's day"
composed of Frige (genetive singular of Freo) + dæg "day" (most likely)
or composed of Frig "Frigg" + dæg "day" (least likely)
Germanic frije-dagaz "Freya's (or Frigg's) day"
Latin dies Veneris "Venus's day"
Ancient Greek hemera Aphrodites "day of Aphrodite"

Freo is identical with freo, meaning free. It is from the Germanic frijaz meaning "beloved, belonging to the loved ones, not in bondage, free".

Freya (Fria) is the Teutonic goddess of love, beauty, and fecundity (prolific procreation). She is identified with the Norse god Freya. She is leader of the Valkyries and one of the Vanir. She is confused in Germany with Frigg.

Frigg (Frigga) is the Teutonic goddess of clouds, the sky, and conjugal (married) love. She is identified with Frigg, the Norse goddess of love and the heavens and the wife of Odin. She is one of the Aesir. She is confused in Germany with Freya.

Venus is the Roman goddess of love and beauty.

Aphrodite (Cytherea) is the Greek goddess of love and beauty.

Thanks!

I never knew about the Greek, either... interesting.

And I think you're right about "frig"-- LMAO! Who would have thought that such a term could possibly be rooted in classical mythology?

Fine, just upstage me, the lot of you! I'm going to go cry in the corner and conjugate some Class III OE weak verbs. :(

From: [identity profile] rebness.livejournal.com
Wait! Come back! Tell us about weak verbs! We love those, too!

Date: 2005-01-06 10:41 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] saffronlie.livejournal.com
Strong verbs demonstrate a change of tense by a change of vowel in the stem (the MnE equivalents like 'sing, sang, sung' etc.) while weak verbs have no vowel change and instead demonstrate conjugate by changes in the suffix. There are three classes of OE weak verbs. Class III has only four members: the verbs for 'think', 'say', 'have' and... 'live', I believe. To say in OE is... 'secgan' (-an always signifies the infinitive form), 'have' might be 'habban' or that might be a different form, and I can't remember the others. I've got to brush up on this stuff in preparation for Beowulf. :D

Yep. English day names are derived after the Norse Gods, presumably because England was invaded by the Vikings and Scandinavian and German conquerors.

We determined that the Latin languages references the Graeco-Roman Gods, didn't we, so that Lundi, Mardi, Mercredi, etc. all bore relation to the Spanish days of the week.

The big question is-- Why is April so-called? I know the other months, but not that! >:

April -- Aphrodite's month
Old English April(is)
Latin Aprilis
Etruscan Apru
Greek Aphro, short for Aphrodite.
Aprilis had 30 days, until Numa when it had 29 days, until Julius when it became 30 days long.

Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love and beauty. She is identified with the Roman goddess Venus.

What I find most interesting is that the days of the week in each language are named after gods and goddesses who appear to correspond across the languages. Like how Thor, as the Norse/English sky god is more or less the equivalent of Jupiter, and they share the same day of the week. I don't know how much of an argument can be made for each culture being influenced by another, but the convergence is striking.

Date: 2005-01-06 09:52 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rebness.livejournal.com
YES.

That is why it's all so fascinating. No, am not being facetious-- it's interesting to see the correlation in the naming of the days. One culture surely must have drawn from the other?

Why isn't there a day named Grendel? >:

That would totally be my favourite day of the week.

Date: 2005-01-06 10:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] saffronlie.livejournal.com
That was the high point of my report on paganism. And something about Eostre being a possible dawn goddess and inspiration for the naming of Easter, but I have to check back on that one.

You should name your least favourite day of the week Grendel-day. Hey, today's Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Thursday should totally be Grendel-day. It always foxes you into thinking it's Friday. >:

From: [identity profile] avariecaita.livejournal.com
Hi, I'm late to the party - per usual. However, Grendel ... how I love thee! Let me count the ways!

1) You're big and mean and *argh with the teeth*
2) You're a mama's boy
3) You killed 'em good before that Beowulf guy came along. TWELVE WINTERS OF GOOD KEEEEELING!
4) You're very clean
5) There's an entire book devoted just to you and your pain
6) You broke my heart

I'd also like to add my two cents on the days thing:

All the romance languages are related, therefore, they share the naming of the days. Latin gave to French, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, and Portugese. When said lands were duly conquered, they took on the mantels of their oppressors. Now, if only I could spell - I'd be set for life!

Grendel was my favourite monster ever. He was all, "I keeeeeel you" for years and years and years, until that git Beowulf decided to rip his bleedin' arm off. >:

And yes! He loved his mummy. He's the best monster around.

Agreeness on the Latin languages! But, smartypants, why does Japanese also correspond to some stuff for the days of the week? Brilliant!
