It struck me today, whilst bristling at someone's calling me Rebecca *cough[livejournal.com profile] saffronliecough* that I don't even know how my own name should be pronounced. I seem to pronounce it differently when asked to give it in formal situations (bank scariness, work scariness, anything scariness) because I rarely use all three awkward syllables and so I'm flummoxed at the strangeness of the name when giving my full title. I mean, it's hardly some really cool, offbeat name. It's fecking Rebecca, for God's sake.

And yet, I'm not sure if it's Ree-becca, Reh-becca or Reb-ecca. I asked my mum, and she said, "well, I always thought you suited Becky better, anyway." I need to stop asking her anything that's not a closed question.

... Yes, I just spent the better part of 10 minutes pronouncing your name. >:-/ I hereby dub you Rahbeccahh (a la Boston).

Well, it'd certainly be different to how they say it round here. LOL!

The only way I've ever heard it pronounced in the US is Rubecca, with the u sounding like the u in under (or rub, for that matter, come to think of it).

Hmm. I've never really heard it pronounced like that over here, but judging from Australian [livejournal.com profile] saffronlie's comment on how she'd pronounce it, I'm beginning to worry that my own dialect is rendering the pronunciation wrong. It's a Hebrew name rather than traditional European, so... um... I'm guessing the "rub" version is actually the right way to say it. Erk.

It is not a pure short "uh" as in "duck", but the neutral vowel in the other end of "under"... well, in my pronunciation, anyway. Your name, in fact, gets two neutral vowel sounds. How sad for you. :(

Anyway, dude, what does it matter how others pronounce it? It only matters how you and those around you do. :P

Right! From now on, I shall pronounce it Zorgwat. Thus Becky has spoken, so shall it be done.

ruh-'bek-ka. Sort of. I'll write it down in phonetics for you. You are more of a Becky, anyway. None of this "Becca" nonsense.

I have issues with my last name, specically when pronounced together with my first name, because the end vowel of my first name and the initial semi-vowel of my surname just do not follow each other smoothly. It requires a almost glottal stop or a harsher emphasis on the "w" to make it work. :(

There's the Rub

But Becky is so Roseanne. Becca's all dynamic and stuff, and Rebecca is totally the hand that rocks the cradle. Or, you know, crazy dead wife.

I never thought that about your name, but I sat in work today (obviously, I need more of a workload) and tried it out. You're right. I hope you take the issue up with your mother. And also that you have more success than I had with mine.

It is my theory that there exists no famous Rebecca or Becky worth a crap. Characters named Becky are always ditzy or whore-ish. Characters named Rebecca are always biatches.
Like that stupid volkswagon commercial....

man walking down street

his cell phone rings

it is his future self calling to give him some advice

future self says "buy the volkswagon"

and..."when you meet Becky......run"

It cracks all my friends up. bah!

oh and i would say it Ruhhhbecca
but I go by Becky as well :D

LMAO!!

I'm so glad we don't have that advert over here. XD

I've always loved that Becky doesn't really rhyme with anything, though. Made school that bit easier, no?

mmm

Maybe. My enemies liked to work off my last name, resulting in some truly stupid insults such as "burger king" and "king tut"
I mean really, how is one supposed to be offended and feel outcast by such idiotic nicknames?

You could, alternately, go with:

And add lots of rolling r's.
