I've never known anything like the bleedin' fog that's draped itself over the North today. It's the thickest, most persistent shroud of annoyingness I've ever encountered. Work for me is in an area of low-lying natural moorland that has been swallowed up by the spread of the city. However, my department is on the eight floor of the hospital and so looking out at the panorama spread below means that one can see a lot of the old moorland. Today, it was almost entirely swallowed up by fog, and it looked so gothic and eerie and silent that several of us kept going to the large office windows to stare. I had a vision of zombies staggering from the mist, arms outstretched to eat the patients who seem unaware that we are a NO. SMOKING. HOSPITAL outside A&E, but alas. They did not materialise. I felt it best not to mention my utopian zombie vision to my colleagues. They wouldn't understand, the low-minded smoker-life-sparing fools.

At one point, the silence was broken by a male colleague 'phoning his friend and moaning loudly that he "felt like we were at the top of Mount f*cking Everest." I suppose you could compare the fog to that, too.

Anyways, Britain itself is currently languishing in all that icy weather malarky, and I'm finding myself quite liking it this time around. The dark nights seriously hamper me to the effect that if I don't take care to get as much sunlight as possible, or to go on those accursed sunbeds every week or so, my mood swings low. But no matter! Snow is forecast over the next week, and I've earmarked some of this month's salary for funky new gloves, another scarf and maybe even a warm coat if it takes my fancy. And maybe some nice cocoa for clichéd fireside pampering. The thing about winter is that indulgence is a given; you've got to give it that, if nothing else.

I love winter. Far better than all the hot weather and boiling to fucking death malarky. Some snow would be splendid though.

Pshaw! You'll miss the bracing Northern rain and bitiness down there, my friend!

I like boiling to fucking death. :(

Sunbeds are so risky, though... what about one of those lightbox things they manufacture for Seasonal Affective Disorder? They're meant to be really good.

I don't know how readily available they are, but I'll take a look into it at work tomorrow. The NHS website might have some ideas. In more desperate moments, I've lain near my bedside lamp, placed it on full glow and closed my eyes and pretended it was the sun. Now I just mark off the days till 22nd of December and remind myself that's the worst it can get.

I understand they're available on the open market; I could swear I've seen one in one of those catalogues of healthcare-related stuff. How good one from such a catalogue would be is another matter, but it might be worth contacting a support group for SAD to see if there's a particular manufacturer they recommend, or even if such a thing is NHS-subsidised.

bah!

I'm really quite jealous. Denver averages 330 days of sunshine a year....do you know what I would give for some fog!?!

How quickly can I get there, again?!

*packs*

Oh, the fog. It's all... misty and wet and low-lying and grey. It's severely overrated. But kind of cool.

I love fog. But anything gets old.

For example, it's sunny in Atlanta. A lot. And I HATE it! LOL. It never freakin' rains, except finally today and I was so happy.

The only time I ever got tired of sun was in Paris, when everyone but the British and Americans couldn't see why people were about to collapse on the streets, it was so humid and horrible. I couldn't bear living in a city with heat like that, but I could certainly stand it anywhere else, for a while, at least.

Hee. Take some of our rain-- we have plenty to spare!

You should check out those bulb that give off full spectrum light and fend off Seasonal affective disorder (SAD). That should help. (I'm thinking of getting one too.

I'm definitely going to look into it. Pretty soon it's going to be dark by half three, and I seriously don't think I can do very well with that. Actually, I know I can't. Urgh.

No no no no no it's the insidious fog of corruption reeking from the town hall, finding its way to the lowliest citizens!

IT'S SO BIG, IT'S SCARY. The book. I'm making a valiant effort, though. Right after Crestomanci.

It's been foggy by you too? It's been awful in the Midlands as well. I've been a grumbling old witch today but you know, I think I might take a leaf out of your book and buy a few goodies! :)

Yeah, do! Retail therapy may be shallow, but it feels damned good!

Thanks for the heads-up on the fog! I'm going to be in Staffordshire startging this Saturday and when I checked the weather on BBC I noticed there was a lot of notes on it being "murky" and cold out. Should be "atmospheric," eh?!

Hee! Most definitely! It's staying this way for at least another week, so I think you'll experience the best (worst?) of British weather. Definitely wrap up warm-- this weather has been amongst our coldest and bitterest for a while, though there will be some sun over the weekend.
